At the beginning of this month I won a contest over at Calamities of Nature, a webcomic that deals with current events, social issues and recently, breast implants. The contest was to accurately identify 13 comics that appeared in a single strip and for my prize I chose the first Calamities of Nature book. This [...]
Podcast episode 6 will be going up a little later this week. As listeners no doubt know, I have been unemployed for months now and am happy to report that that has been remedied. As such, I will be becoming accustomed to my new schedule for the next little bit and I’m afraid some stuff (like the [...]
As mentioned in episode five of the podcast, we need a name for the damn thing. This is where you, the awesome reader/listener come in!
Below are some ideas that fellow podcast host Jason Mckinnon and myself have come up with. Vote for the ones you like there or please feel free to suggest your own [...]

Taking a look at the metacritic score of Uncharted 2 one can see that reviewers really like the game. It’s not surprising given how good the first one was.
The first Uncharted for me felt like a grand adventure, a continuation of the spirit of excitement and exploration and melodrama of the old Indiana Jones movies. [...]
In this episode we discussed WoW Cataclysm, City of Heroes, Fringe, How I Met Your Mother, the webcomic Virtual Shackles, the PSP-Go, the movie Hot Rod and Cola Freedom, among other things.

My friend and fellow cartoonist, Gerry Vail of 40k Funnies recently drew his take on Jim. I found it to be awfully kickass, so I thought I ought to show it to you.
I’ve decided to bring back the forum after taking it down this past summer. With it’s return comes a new look and a simplified structure.
To kick things off I thought that since I’ll be recording the third podcast tonight, you guys could pose some questions to Jason and I, that we might answer on air. To [...]
Here is the second episode of the still unnamed podcast. This one is a little bit longer and a little bit better than last weeks. If you have any comments or questions for me or Jason or ideas on what to call the show, feel free to email me (evan at ofnoobsandmen dot com) or let [...]
I may have mentioned it before, but I really want Just Cause 2. I would like it if it were in my hands right now. I would even go so far as to pull a Cartman and freeze myself in the mountains just to lessen the perceived wait.
Ah, well I guess I’ll have to make [...]
This past week many of you returned to school. A great year of learning awaits you, but before you jump headlong into your studies perhaps you could take a minute and help out your friendly neighbourhood cartoonist. You can do so by sharing your enjoyment of Of Noobs and Men with your friends. Tell [...]
Out of the blue, here is the first ever Of Noobs and Men Podcast! It’s a little rough around the edges, (especially the audio in the beginning) but it’s still an enjoyble listen. If you have any comments or questions for me or Jason or ideas on what to call the show, feel free to [...]
It’s been a while since I’ve done a review here, but I felt compelled to do so with Arkham Asylum.
The first couple of preview I saw of the game didn’t inspire much confidence and the game was not on my radar until the demo came out. I thought that it looked too simple and that [...]

A brand new Tangent is up! Click here for a snickerin’.
If you’re interested I’ve posted the sketch page process I went through in trying to determine what the new female character in ONAM would look like over on my sketchblog. I like how cute she turned out and I’m excited to use her more in the coming strips.
Yesterday we got the torrent of news all about the PS3 Slim. Today I’ve realized that after the abomination that was the PSP Go, we can now confirm that who ever was responsible for the look of the original PSP, PS3, and slim PS2 has either left Sony or had something horrible happen to destroy [...]
I was talking with a friend of mine recently and I mentioned Powerthirst and was shocked to find he had never heard of it. While I quickly rectified that situation it made me wonder, how many other people haven’t seen this gem? If you’re one of said people, then please watch this. For the sake [...]
If you’re like me or regular ONAMite Coppertops, you’ve been enjoying the hell out of Red Faction Guerrilla’s multiplayer offerings. Whether its the awesome online stuff or wrecking crew with friends on the same couch, there is a lot to enjoy about it. Well according to this story on Joystiq there’s gonna be more of [...]
The footage in question is from the panel at comic con this year and is located here. Though the video quality is poor, the movie itself looks quite promising.
I’m sorry, if I could embed the video I would.
I received an email today informing me that my work will be included among dozens of others in the Virtual Gallery portion of the Monsters of Webcomics exhibition at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco. The exhibition begins August 8th and will run till December 6th. The comics that will be on display are [...]
Here is the best quality video I could find of the Smallville Comic Con trailer for season 9. Its got some very exciting things in it, especially the last shot.
I’ve read that this coming season (which starts in late September) will be about Clark’s darkest hour, which explains the suit. I think it’ll be a [...]
As this article from Kotaku details, LittleBigPlanet is at some point in the future going to have Marvel Universe costumes. The concept renders they’ve shown off so far are at the top of this post.
These sorts of costumes would be the type of thing I’d buy for LBP if I hadn’t already made my own [...]
A 7 part Halo anime series will be released on DVD and Xbox Live in early 2010. Because apparently Microsoft doesn’t realize that their main demographic for Halo is people who have never seen anime in their lives.
The best part of this announcement though is the quote from Frank O’Connor “If you look at how [...]
Folks, today marks the second anniversary for Of Noobs and Men! Today’s comic will be up a little bit late as it’s going to be a 32 panel monster. In the mean time check out this awesome rendering of Jim from Kyle Lees who does the excellent comic Premise Beach.
If you’re feeling a little nostalgic [...]
Visit the ONAM store and get one for yourself today!
I thought that you guys might appreciate seeing some amazing ninja turtle art, which is collected in this article over at The Design Inspiration. My illustration (above) is not one of them, but I’m still pretty happy with it.
A hearty Happy Canada Day to all of my fellow Canadians. This is our day to remember how awesome we are as a country. I’m going to try to enjoy it despite the forecasted rain tomorrow.
To all my wonderful American readers, I haven’t forgotten about you! I know your nation’s birthday is coming up on [...]
The comic today will be up a tad late today, but in the meantime perhaps you could check out the Tangent that I posted on Wednesday if you haven’t already.
Listening to the latest Webcomic Beacon today I was happy to hear the hosts give their impressions of ONAM. If you’d like to hear what they said you can check out the podcast here. Their thoughts about the comic begin at around the 29 minute mark.
Their impressions were mostly positive, which is a quite an [...]
After almost two years of ONAM I am very excited to announce that I am now offering the first ever Of Noobs And Men merchandise! It comes in the form of t-shirts and it’s taken so long primarily because I wanted to do my research and find the best print on demand t-shirt company I [...]
I was really expecting that the press conferences at this years E3 would be vastly different in terms of quality. I was all set to do a comic about one company mercilessly beating another. But then the actual events were pretty much all good.
The Microsoft one showed a bunch of great games and a damn [...]
As most of you know, this week is E3. Its the big annual gaming expo and there are a lot of announcements and reveals and previews that come out of it. If you’d like to see my reactions to the big announcements you can check out my twitter feed, if you’re looking for the most [...]
I adored the first Just Cause and would still be playing it to this day if my disk hadn’t crapped out on me. Of all the open world games ever published it was my favorite because everywhere was available to you. Want to go thousands of feet into the air? No problem, you can just [...]
Last weeks Pokeball comic is doing quite well in the Joystiq Weekly Webcomic Wrapup. As in, it’s currently second place. If you haven’t already voted then perhaps I could persuade you to click here and vote for it. If we could close the gap and maybe beat Penny Arcade it would cause me copious amounts [...]
Hey DC! Some of your movies are gonna suck anyways so why not make more of them? I’m sure I’ll enjoy a Justice League movie when it eventually comes out in 2031 but how about you give me something more to look forward to than the release of Green Lantern in (maybe) 2011?
Perhaps a new [...]
This is (possibly) the first trailer for the sequel to Shadow of the Colossus. Though it hasn’t been confirmed yet as such and it is technically still a rumor, it looks pretty damn real to me. Also it looks like it’s all in-game footage. That seems most evidenced by the feathers on the creature’s head. [...]
If you’ve got a little time to kill then check out this flash game that I did the environments on. It’s called Sheep Siege and though it’s still in beta it is very playable and difficult.
The point of the game is to march your sheep across the map to the enemy castle and take your [...]
Yesterday I read this post on Joystiq about how the producer of Final Fantasy 13 thinks that the game is more than just a JRPG (Japanese Role Playing Game). I’m pretty sure, based on all accounts of the demo, that FFXIII pretty much epitomizes the JRPG genre. Its got turn based battles, flashy cutscenes, boring [...]
Kotaku had an intersting post on a Flikr user named Steven Lefcourt posting images of 8-Bit characters being shown commiting the murders or atrocities from their games in gory detail. Check em out.
I know I can’t be the first person in history to illustrate the same point, so I’m not upset. It’s just cool to [...]

I’m curious to see what you, my lovely readers, thought of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
First off, the Wolverine Demo is available to download on 360 right now and hot damn is it good. I’d suggest you check it out, post haste. That game is easily the most violent I’ve ever seen Wolverine be in an animated form.
If you don’t have a 360 and want a Wolvie fix you could [...]
Do you like Warhammer 40K? Then you’ll love 40K Funnies. They’re beautifully drawn humor comics inspired by playing Warhammer 40K. The creative team of Gerry Vail and Justin Schilbach (whom you may remember from this or this) are good friends of mine, so do me a solid and check em out.
Hey dudes and dudettes, I’d like to gauge your interest in t-shirts. They would be done via one of the more reputable print on demand sites on the internet and feature original new designs and some redrawn and reworked concepts taken out of the comics.
Please let me know in the comments or via evan@ofnoobsandmen.com if [...]
I think I’ve mentioned Love before here, but for those that don’t know it’s a procedurally generated MMO being made by one man. Anyway, below is a new video demonstrating the game.
The powers that be over at Joystiq (namely Griffin McElroy) have quite awesomely included Be Strong, Kazooie in the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup this week. Perhaps you wouldn’t mind heading over there and voting for it?
If you’re reading the comics in RSS you might not realize that I am also updating the other parts of ONAM. You can check out the newest Tangents here and the newest Sketchblog posts here.
I really liked Fight Night Round 3 until the day my 360 fell over while it was playing. Disc never worked after that, but hey, at least it gives me more incentive to pick up FNR4. This video shows off the improvements they’ve made to the game with the help of your friend and mine: physics!
If you’ve watched any of the Clone Wars CG animated series than I am sure you must share this anger with me. Why does it never occur to the Jedi in the show to use the force to their advantage? Starting from the first episode where you’d expect Yoda to tear dudes apart with the [...]
The site has changed! For the most part it’s done, though I’m still going to be tweaking things here and there for the next week. As well I’ll be completely redoing the About, Gallery and Downloads sections.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
I’d like to thank whoever it was who stumbled the comic last week as it lead to a lot more eyes seeing it. If you could do that more often anonymous reader, then I would be most appreciative.
So the comic that went up yesterday was an April Fools joke. If the panels seemed familiar its because they were taken from four seperate comics. In order they were: Red Letter Day, Watch Men, Mushroom Kingdom Mortal and Um, No Thanks.
The title was in reference to a classic April Fools Day joke that EGM pulled in 1992, wherein they [...]
Currently over at Ominous Knife there is a guest strip that I did, which you can find here. I got the inspiration from a line in panel 3 of this OK comic. Go check it out!
Now!
Check out this Mega64 video in which the guys dress up as Snake and Raiden and awesome it up with two special guests.
After a week of no internet, I am back online. Thanks for sticking in there guys. This week there will be more comics than the usual Tuesday and Friday to make up for it.Also this week there might be a slight redesign to the site. Click here for a preview of the new logo.
It’s been a while since I last touched on podcasts, so I thought today would be a good time to touch on them again.
To see my first post about em click here. In it I explain what podcasts are and how to get them on your iPod.
Last time I talked exclusively about gaming podcasts, so [...]
This may be a hoax, or not mean anything at all, but this video is still incredible. Kotaku contends that it may be a viral video for some sort of Half-Life product, but it uses music from the show Lost, so I don’t know. Take a look for yourself.
For the Canadian readers, did you know that Best Buy and Future Shop are actually the same company? For everyone else, did you know that Future Shop is Canada’s largest electronics retailer? Now you do. You’re welcome.
Last Friday’s comic won third place in the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup on Joystiq dot com. I’ve never gotten that many votes, so this feels pretty frickin’ awesome. Thank you so much to everyone who voted!
I thought it might be cool to share some of the stages that one of my comics typically goes through. For this example I’ll use last Friday’s comic It’s Simple, Just Grind Inner Peace.
First I have an idea, usually right before I fall asleep. Then I gotta turn on the lights, jot it down and [...]
First the bad news. It is crunch time on the flash game I’m working on currently so the next several comics will be single panels, or simply drawn multipanels.
Now for the good news. The upcoming Wolverine game looks astonishing. Check out the newest trailer below.
This past December my cousins and I had our second annual gameathon, wherein we sit around for week and play through the best releases of the past year.
Our first year we played Uncharted, Unreal Tournament 3 and Rush 2049 and others in my brother’s cramped apartment. For our second year we decided to move to a location [...]
What a better topic for a WikiWednesday than the best show to ever appear on Wednesdays, Lost.
The conception section is scary in that the show Lost was initially concieved to be sounds incredibly mundane and run of the mill. Thank god JJ Abrams, Lindelof and Cuse stepped in and were able to turn it into the single greatest story [...]
Then you should check out Quake Live. It’s essentially Quake 3 but free and it runs in your browser. It takes about 15 minutes to run through all the set up and then you’re squaring off against dudes all over the planet. My username is MagnitudeMan, so if you see me in a game, feel [...]
I know the majority of you probably won’t know who this is, but Sir John A. Macdonald was Canada’s first Prime Minister.
He was also a bit of a drinker.
There is currently a rumor that the next Superman movie is internally being called ‘Superman Unleashed’. If that is true then it spurs a whole host of questions like “what unleashes him?” and “who’s he going to take his anger out on?” Doomsday perhaps? Braniac? Metallo? Darkseid? My cousin and I tried to write a [...]
Wolverine Movie Will Have More Mutants Than All 3 X-Men Films Combined
By Evan on February 19th, 2009Check out this TV spot for X-Men Legends: Wolverine.
‘Wolverine’ TV Spot: Legends @ Yahoo! Video
Did you notice Cyclops?! Because he’s in there. Here’s hoping they do him justice and treat him better than the previous movies have.
Obviously I’m not talking about the ring of light around an angel’s head, but instead the franchise that was many gamers first FPS. The development section of the article is most interesting, as the game was initially going to be a real time strategy game before it morphed into a third person shooter and then [...]
If you’ve played Half-Life 2 at all then this video, which was made for under $500, will take your breath away.
It’s the first of a series of episodes depicting a group of people trying to escape from City 17 and it’s awesomeosity is off the charts.
This might seem an odd choice, however you should take a look at the Development section of the article as it outlines how the original script was so much darker than how the movie ended up. Also, Groundhog day an excellent movie.
The full story is here, but basically because Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games sold so well Nintendo will be continuing the franchise in 2010. To the best of my recollection this will be the first game to take place in Canada since that one level in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3.
This past weekend I rented Spider-Man: Web of Shadows for PS3. I had stayed away from it since its release back in the fall due to its lukewarm reviews and the overall glut of games that were coming out. I thought that now would be a good time to give the game a try.
What I [...]
This past Saturday I watched the Super Mario Bros movie. Don’t ask me why, but I suppose I was in a self mutilating mood.
And incase you were wondering: yes, it is worse than you remember.
UC Berkley is offering a course in Starcraft. Not a course about the concepts presented in the game, or academic study of it but simply a course in which you play Starcraft. It makes me wonder what the final exam in a course like that would be. Or how badly UC Berkley is hurting for [...]
If you owned a Genesis or Mega Drive growing up you no doubt have many fond memories of the blue blur. In recent years, we’ve seen Sonic fall from grace, but you should take a look at how he was created.
The Characteristics section of this article is quite hilarious.
I never had a Virtual Boy, but I tried one out once in a Zellers (a canadian department store). Felt nauseous for a week afterward.
Sorry guys, but due to a blackout in my area of Toronto last night the comic will be going up later than usual today.
“I know who you are, Gambit.”That’s from the Wolverine trailer that came out last month. Wolvie’s voice goes wonky on the word Gambit (as though he were from Minesota or something), but that doesn’t diminish the excitment I have at seeing him in the movie in May.
Pogs. Yeah, I wasted a bunch of money on them too.
When Kevin Ireland won Comment of the Week several weeks ago I suggested that I could do a guest strip for his site, Ominous Knife. I’m a big fan of the strip and I thought I could hopefully do it justice. He agreed and I set to the task of trying to write a strip [...]
I hate to do this to you guys after such a long storyline, but my holiday break is here. As such I will be away from my computer for the next two and a half weeks and unable to do the standard comics. What I’ll be doing to work around this is doing the next [...]
Though Coppertops didn’t request anything for his win last week, I decided to do two versions of his request from 3 weeks ago. The first is as it was asked, himself on fire. The second reflects his skills as a programmer.
The winner for last week is Eric with his comment
Ahaha, love that last panel.
“What the [...]
I would like to know which game you, the oNaM Readers, thought was the best this past year.
Below is the poll, if you have a different game you’d rather pick please mention it in the comments.
COTW 8 winner Trevnor requested a picture of his fellow oNaMite Spaltzer being attacked by a eagle-like and blue Jim.
The winner for last week is Coppertops. Though he was the only one who made captioned comics, they were pretty good. This one being my favorite.
This coming week COTW will be decided in the standard way, [...]
The first game I ever saw running on a PS2 was SSX. It blew me away with its speed, clarity and sheer awesomeness. If I wasn’t already sold on the system by that point, seeing SSX clinched it. Now here we are, years into the new generation and we haven’t seen hide nor hair of [...]
